FRE (me from XP)

Argh...my computer is giving me fits. When the processor is just the slightest bit busy, the sound starts skipping and distorting. You know that welcome song that your Windows XP sings to you when you turn it on? It's usually so soothing and reassuring - a great way to start the morning. Mine sounds like a yodeling William Hung.

I tried switching my primary IDE controller from PIO to DMA, but Windows really wants to use PIO, so it looks like I have to uninstall my IDE controller and then reinstall it. What a pain in the arse...and that might not even be the problem. Grrrrrrrrrr.

1. White Stripes - Do.

This is dirty, old kind of White Stripes. Which is a good thing.

2. Fiona Apple - Not About Love.

Extraordinary Machines...my computer is not one.

3. Schtum - Skydiver.

I've never heard a better song about skydivers. Heck, even skydiving in general!

4. Radiohead - Knives out.

This is a good song for driving at night...makes me feel like a real badass.

5. Weezer - Say It Ain't So.

Say it ain't so, computer. This sound glitch of yours is so annoying!

6. Sleater-Kinney - Buy Her Candy.

Timely advice, ladies.

7. Beck - Atmospheric Conditions.

Speaking of, the announcer on the radio this morning said that this weekend it's supposed to get down to "30, 40, 50 below wind chills". Ouch.

8. Nine Inch Nails - Dead Souls.

I prefer this version over the original by Joy Division.

9. Pixies - Alec Eiffel.

"They didn't want it but he built it anyway", "He thought big and they called it phallic"...so many great lines in this one.

10. Luscious Jackson - Why Do I Lie?

Probably my favorite LJ song. This whole album is like a mini-vacation to a tropical island...which will be cold comfort when the wind chill drops to around 30 below this weekend.

11. The Breeders - I Can't Help It If I'm Still In Love With You.

As near as I can tell, this is a one-take, goofing-around outtake, complete with stumbles along the guitar strings, but the raw feeling makes this Hank Williams classic all the more compelling.

Hey, I just tried the IDE fix - and it worked! In your face, Microsoft!!!

I never thought of it that way! It's the truth!
